Canada Day 2008: Mosaic masses of humanity

Yesterday was Canada Day and, to celebrate, we spent several hours in the afternoon at Calgary's Prince's Island Park. We wandered the paths enjoying the masses of people out walking and biking and rollerblading; families and couples and groups of teenagers. Calgary should feel like a grand mixture of different cultures and personalities and traditions and yesterday it did (unlike in two days from now, when Stampede starts and everyone becomes a cowboy).

We heard live bands and buskers, did some serious people-watching, ate some mini-donuts and participated in the spectacle that is Canada Day.

A children's show

For all generations

Free hugs! And people took them up on the offer.

Duck-watching on the stream that makes Prince's Park an island.

Ripe Washington cherries

The all important traditional mini-donuts, made fresh

This is just the secondary stage

A Latino band from Columbia performs at Eau Claire Market

A magician entertains the kids at the "busk stop"

Setting up for the headliner: Jeremy Fisher and his backup band from Hamilton Ontario. They put on a good show.

We'll be back here in a couple of weeks for Shakespeare in the Park!

I love Lil' Orbits Mini-Donuts. They're the best.

Such a good snack, we managed to limit ourselves to one bag, but too easy to over do it :)
